Anarchy in the News

Media Representations of Anarchy

About

Media depictions of anarchists are appallingly skewed.  Journalists, often eager to believe “official” accounts of stories, are quick to blame us for any violence.  More skeptical and conscientious journalists, still ignorant of anarchist philosophy, aren’t able to depict us accurately either.  And then there are the people who do things in our name who clearly have no understanding of what anarchism is about.

This site will keep an eye on depictions of anarchists in the news.  It will be a record of those depictions, which in and of itself should be useful.  But the hope is that individuals who follow this site will challenge negative and inaccurate depictions of anarchists.  Individual anarchists can comment on blog posts, write letters to the editor, or contact journalists with information.

Every once in a while there is a story that gets so much press that it will provide an opportunity to provide an anarchist point of view to a large audience.  For those instances, it would be helpful to have a coordinated (and timely) response.  With your help, this site will develop a set of responses to typical anarchist portrayals in the media – a set of policies, or a manifesto of sorts.  These responses, having been worked out ahead of time, will be at the ready for the next time we need them.  A little tweaking (on a predetermined timeline) and then the response will be up for any anarchist to sign onto.  It can then be published as an editorial or ad.
